Almost every organization that operates in our sectors will tell you that they do research. So we are careful to focus on survey and research services that directly advance our mission and where our supporters tell us we have a comparative advantage. That means qualitative and quantitative research from the frontiers of knowledge regarding vulnerable people. It means crunching numbers that support impact on our themes and which open up new implementation services.
Our donors tell us that our survey and research projects add the most value when they drive through the intersection between our specialist thematic knowledge and our strongest implementation capabilities. Think displaced people and counselling, or terrorism and strategic communications, or social inclusion and monitoring and evaluation. So what is survey research at Seefar? It’s the collaboration we have with vulnerable populations to understand how we can work together to build a better future.
We measure the performance of our research with two metrics. First, we follow the impact of our public activities, such as survey design and survey research. We are interested to see how this work influences ideas about themes such as migration, human trafficking, the rule of law and social inclusion. Second, we run research and development projects that improve our effectiveness in services such as strategic communications, counselling and development consulting. This is research with a purpose, supporting services with a mission.
Here are some examples of how we deploy our research and survey services:
- Longitudinal surveying of displaced people, so we can understand who moves where, why, and what they need
- Measuring the impact of projects that aim to reduce the number of victims of modern slavery
- Investigating monitoring and evaluation in programs to scale and improve effectiveness
- Converting large-scale qualitative data on human trafficking into a structured database, in order to highlight trends and gaps in human trafficking statistics and human trafficking policies
