We have a mission to prevent human trafficking. We help potential migrants to make good decisions, support them to benefit more from their employment, develop ethical competitors to existing migrant employment arrangements, and identify for governments the positive changes they can make to legislation and international agreements. From child trafficking to modern slavery among domestic workers to exploitation in the fishing industry, we apply our services to promote better outcomes for low-skilled migrants.
For us, low-skilled labor migration that crosses borders is a great opportunity to improve life for poor people. The markets for this labor deserve attention because abuse is so common in them. Our focus is on the perspective of market actors, which means running projects that support migrants to benefit more from migration and developing alternatives, and competitors, to current recruitment arrangements.
Our survey and research services have helped to explore new frontiers of knowledge on patterns of exploitation and opportunities to intervene in markets prone to modern slavery. We explore human trafficking statistics and implement qualitative research to find pathways to progress among the stories of human trafficking victims. Our strategic communications group uses innovative methods to engage with potential victims and with those who facilitate trafficking. Our counselling system has demonstrated that efficient and effective support can be delivered in a way that empowers leadership by vulnerable people.
Here are some examples of how we deploy our expertise in relation to modern slavery and human trafficking:
- Piloting new methods to improve outcomes for vulnerable people interested in migration
- Large-scale surveys that have shifted international perspectives on modern slavery, such as in East Asia
- Local and regional analysis of child trafficking and child sex exploitation
- Testing community attitudes to exploitative practices, in order to design strategic communications and development activities that work with the grain of public opinion
- Program design for donors seeking better approaches to victim reintegration
